FLEMING ISLAND - Fleming Island High’s baseball team coupled a tough district title with a region quarterfinal win over the defending Class 8A champions as the topsy-turvy season added a 3-1 win over Tallahassee Lincoln under the Fleming Island High baseball lights on Tues., May 8. The region playoff win was Fleming Island’s first foray into the second round of the state playoffs.
“Ever since we beat Clay in the early part of the season, we have been playing not paying attention to records,” said senior captain Calab Lanoux, after his sterling seven innings of pitching with five strikeouts that fueled the Lincoln win. “Clay was kind of the restart, then we beat Pensacola Catholic, then Fletcher and we just keep poking along. The district title created a whole new season.”
Fleming Island advanced to play Tues., May 15 at Tallahassee Chiles, a 4-2 winner over Lincoln for the district 1-8A title and a 3-0 region winner over Atlantic Coast, in the region semifinal. Chiles owns a 7-4 win over Fleming Island from March 2.
In the Lincoln game, Fleming Island got Lincoln’s first batters out with good field defense before opening with singles from Drew Wilkerson and Zack Mercer to set up Cole Belcher’s run-scoring simgle that scored Wilkerson and pushed Mercer to third.
From there, Collier Summers walked to load the bases with Mercer scoring on a wild pitch. Scott Kondroik walked to load the bases once more with Hudson hitting a fielder’s choice grounder to score Belcher. Adam Peck reached first on a dropped third strike, but Summers was tagged out to end the inning with Fleming Island up 3-0.
Fleming Island had a final shot at a run in the sixth with singles from Summers, Kondroik and Peck, but Summers got nailed at home on the third out.
Lincoln opened a tense seventh inning with a double, but Lanoux got two flyouts and a final strikeout to squash the move.
