ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College womens soccer coach Ashley Martin has a set corner kick play specifically called ‘Fleming Island’ because two key players on the play are Fleming Island High grads Brooke DeLauder, a defender, and Abby Austin, a midfielder.
“I watched Abby and Brooke play in their senior year for Fleming Island High School, and they ran a clever corner routine which I thought my team could use,” said Flagler soccer coach Ashley Martin. “We nicknamed it the Fleming Island, and have had it in our set piece repertoire ever since.” In a match on September 20, DeLauder and Austin worked the Fleming Island to perfection with DeLauder sending her corner kick toward Austin who let the ball roll under her legs untouched to forward Katie Reed who bashed a shot toward Lander University goalie Sarah Owen, who made a flying knockdown of the initial shot. Flagler forward Myiah Russack-Cradeur followed up the knocked down ball with a shot into the back of the net to put Flagler up 1-0.
Myiah Russack-Cradeur would score a second goal in the second half as Flagler stayed unbeaten at 6-0-1 with a 1-0 win Saturday at previously unbeaten Nova Southeastern. The Saints improved to 6-0-1 overall, matching their best start to a season since 2012. The Nova Sharks fell to 5-1-0 overall. Saturday’s defeat marked the first home loss for Nova Southeastern since Sept. 11, 2015.
Flagler’s schedule continues with Peachbelt Conference matches at Georgia Southwestern on September 27 and North Georgia on September 30.
Against Nova, DeLauder found Russack-Cradeur with a 40 yard free kick that led to Russack-Cradeur finishing with her fourth goal of the season.
“Brooke is having her best season yet, and it is all down to her hard work during the off season and summer,” said Martin. “She was determined to come into preseason in her best shape ever, and she did. Besides her fitness, Brooke is a wonderful 1v1 defender and gives us great possession out of the back. Her set piece deliveries create havoc for opponents, and I’m sure before this season is out, she will earn more goals and assists.”
Austin has seven shots on goals in the first seven games with three assists but no goals. DeLauder has two shots on goal from her defender position with one assist against Nova Southeastern. DeLauder has executed seven corner kicks.
“Abby may not have had any noticeable stats so far this season, but she is a key player for us,” said Martin. “She has excellent technique and awareness makes her a fabulous playmaking midfielder. She is a true leader both on and off the field.”
In 2016, Austin finished with three goals off 13 shots on goal with one a gamewinner.
Flagler is now ranked No. 25 in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 after beating Nova.
