Golf classic gears up for 25th annual tournament
FLEMING ISLAND – The Clay County Golf Classic presented by Coastal Spine & Pain Center is accepting players and sponsors for its 25th annual tournament scheduled for September 23-24. The Classic, established to provide Clay County with a championship golf tournament of Northeast Florida golfers and to perpetuate a college scholarship fund for Clay County students with need, has awarded 424 scholarships valued at approximately $640,000 since 1991.
The competitive play, two-day golf tournament will be held Sept. 23-24 at Magnolia Point Golf and Country Club and Eagle Harbor Golf Club, respectively. Player positions are limited and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The player entry fee is $225 and includes all golf and cart fees for tournament rounds, a practice round at each course (carts additional), prizes, tournament favors, breakfast on Saturday and lunch on Sunday. Prizes include first, second, and third place gift certificates totaling $300 per day per flight for the low 18-hole daily scores in each flight (gross and net when applicable) for each of the two rounds (based on 8 players per flight).
Participation is open to all golfers at least 18 years of age as of September 23, 2017 who have an established USGA handicap. Senior entrants must be 55 years of age by September 23, 2017. The format is for individual medal play. Players returning the lowest 36-hole total gross score from the Regular, Senior, and Ladies divisions will be declared their respective Champions and will receive a valuable commemorative award. Clay County residents and participants from 2016 will be given entry priority thru September 1, 2017.
Sponsorships are available, which include entry to the tournament and help provide scholarships to graduates from Clay County high schools attending college and trade schools. The Clay County Golf Classic is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Cancer walk looking for a few pink men
ORANGE PARK – The American Cancer Society is looking for men to be candidates for its 2017 “Real Men Wear Pink” campaign.
Real Men Wear Pink gives community leaders the opportunity to support the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives from breast cancer while raising funds through friendly competitions. A campaign typically consists of approximately 15-20 male community leaders, each with the goal of raising funds for the American Cancer Society.
The campaign culminates in the fall with the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, a noncompetitive 3-to-5 mile walk that raises awareness and money for the fight against breast cancer. The event raises money to fund innovative research, provide free information and support, and to help people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable. Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer in women and 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
This year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Clay County is scheduled for Oct. 14 at Moosehaven Retirement Community along U.S. Highway 17 Park Avenue in Orange Park. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with the Opening Ceremony at 8 and the walk at 9 a.m.
There will be an annual kickoff event on Aug. 2, marking the start of the fundraising campaign, which runs through Oct. 14, the day of the walk. More information is online at www.makingstrideswalk.org/clayfl or for men who wish to volunteer, contact Ernie Cohen at (904) 710-5148.

Real estate school forms partnership with college
ORANGE PARK – St. Johns River State College and First Coast School of Real Estate recently signed an agreement to provide a 63-hour pre-licensing course for real estate students. Coursework will begin in July on SJR State’s Orange Park campus and is open to all members of the community.
“It is an honor to be able to partner with the college I once attended. I believe this partnership will fill a void in the Northeast Florida area for students who are seeking an exciting and rewarding career in real estate,” said Stanley Bishop, FCSRE president and co-founder.
Bishop said he can attest to the variety of benefits that come from having a real estate license.
“Being a realtor myself, I know the many benefits this career can have, including opening so many doors for financial freedom and personal growth. I’m fortunate that I can partner with my alma mater and make a difference in the community,” Bishop said.
Joel Abo, director of SJR State’s Business Education program, described the partnership as a win-win situation.
“FCSRE is able to access and market to our students, which provides our students additional educational and career opportunities,” he said.
The first real estate pre-licensing course is planned for Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, July 25 to Oct. 5, from 6-9 p.m. Students are required to complete 63 classroom hours, followed by passing a classroom exam with a score of 70 percent or higher. Passing the pre-licensing test permits students to take the state Real Estate Sales Associate Exam, which requires a score of 75 percent or higher to pass.
