DESTIN –Clay and Ridgeview high wrestling stepped on to the mat against a handful of Louisiana powerhouse teams and finished with top 10 team finishes at the Border Wars wrestling invitational held Sat., Dec. 2 in Destin.

With Louisiana state champioin Holy Cross taking top team honors with 641.5 points and St. Paul of Louisiana, fourth in Louisiana last year, runnerup at 604, Clay finished seventh in 331.5 with Ridgeview just behind in ninth at 297.5.

Clay got a first place finish from Yulee transfer Steve Chopek at 120, the 113 Class 1A runnerup last year, who won a 10-5 match over Holy Cross’ Michael Lundin, third at 113 at last year’s Louisiana state meet, and top three finishes from Cale Hoskinson, also a Yulee transfer, who beat Seth Weinthal of South Walton 6-1 for the 126 pound bronze; Abbott Taylor, who lost to Marianna’s Cole Maddox, a Class 1A runnerup at 170 for Arnold High School, in the 195 championship match 8-5, and Ryan Rivers, at 285, who was pinned by Tennessee Soddy’s Addison Roberts to finish fourth. Soddy is currently sixth-ranked in Tennessee.

For Ridgeview, at 106, Matthew Rodriguez came home with a gold medal with a tech fall, 18-1, win over Holy Cross’s Jacob Frost, a Louisiana freestyle state champion, while Saeid Ejmali, at 138, lost a 5-4 decision in his championship match to St. Paul’s Cole Houser, a Louisiana state champ at 126.

Clay warmed up for the Border War trip with a dual meet win, 57-21 over Orange Park on Wed., Nov. 29 led by pins from Chopek, Daniel Porter at 126, Hoskinson, Grant Stanish at 145, Carson Yost at 170, Joe Grelli at 220 and Ryan Rivers at 285. Abbott Taylor won 15-4 at 195.

For Orange Park, Davon Baily at 113, Jacob Moore at 182 won by pin with Jacob Campbell winning at 160 by decision.

Orange Park will host the Orange Park Duals on Friday.
