ORANGE PARK – Orange Park Junior High seventh grader Mei Chiang blasted from the start of her two races at the Clay County Junior High track and field championships at Ridgeview High on April 28 and never looked back en route to winning the 800 and 1600 races in dominating fashion.
Chiang, who has set the pace in the recent year for area 5Ks, middle school cross country and her track endeavors, won the 800 in 2:30.84 while blitzing a 5:30.46 in the 1600.
Although Chiang’s mile time was fast, the top five girls all broke six minutes for the event.
Green Cove Springs Jayden Sherer, a seventh grader, held off a furious finish from Lakeside’s Kameron Wallizada to win the 1600 in 5:09.79.
In the final team scores, Lake Asbury won in the womens ranks with 104 points to edge Oakleafs 97 points and Lake Asbury’ 75 points.
For the boys, Lakeside won convincingly with 115 points followed by Oakleaf at 93 and Bradford at 74.
For the girls, winners were Adrian Jenkins of Lake Asbury in the 100 hurdles in 18.47; Andrea Lee of Bradford in the 100 meter dash in 13.50; Stephanie Morelus of Lake Asbury in the 200 in 28.17; Alyssa Williams of Oakleaf in the 400 in 1:04.23; Lake Asbury’s 4 x 100 relay in 53.64; Orange Park’s 4 x 400 relay in 4:42.07, Skylar Baltezegar of Lakeside in the discus at 93’-9:, Zoe Whaley of Orange Park in the high jump at 4’-6”, Caudio Oates in the long jump at 15’-1”, Skylar Baltezegar of Lakeside in the shot put at 33’-3” and Green Cove Springs’ 4 x 800 relay in 11:08.59.
For boys, winners were Karey Henry-Duncan of Oakleaf in the 100 hurdles in 14.98; Pedro Carter of Bradford in the 100 in 12.03; Jayden Scherer of Green Cove Springs in the 1600 in 5:09.79; Pedro Carter of Bradford in the 200 in 24.94; Andy Patterson of Lake Asbury in the 400 in 55.35; Bradford 4 x 100 in 47.75; Lakeside 4 x 400 in 4:03.67; Bradford’s 4 x 800 relay in 9:44.86; Warren Chase of Lakeside in the 800 in 2:18.46; Van Franklin of Oakleaf in the discus in 105’-7”; Spencer Calise of Lakeside in the high jump in 5’-4”; Markez Sermons of Lakeside in the long jump in 19’-4.25” and Evan Sheets of Green Cove Springs in 41’-8.5”.
