ORANGE PARK - With one spectacular end zone, helicopter-scoring reception, Orange Park High wideout Marquise Brown topped his marquis performance in a Wednesday 7 on 7 scrimmage against Ed White as the Raiders look to improve on a strong spring game and a pretty strong first year for head coach Tom Macpherson.
With lefty quarter A.J. Mealer manning the grass behind center, Orange Park had much success with Brown from multiple lengths across the field with his touchdown highlight reel catch coming off a flag pattern from about 30 yards out and a second barnburner coming off a 12 yard slant pattern turned big gain with Brown’s footspeed.
Terrance Johnson, a junior, showed off some vertical speed as a wideout on the sidelines with able ball catching skills.
At quarterback, Mealer, also a junior, was able to pick and choose his targets and deliver well positioned passes throughout the session as both teams showed off some explosiveness from the line of scrimmage.
On defense, with Deonte Domineck and David Araujo clogging the middle of the field, speedster Kadin Elmore manned one corner with Jeremy Barber filling the second slot. Robby Reynolds was in the safety shot and Ed White had some success over the center of the field to give Macpherson and his defensive staff some need for evaluation.
On one our pattern, Elmore, giving a three inch disadvantage to the Ed White receiver was in great position, but was outjumped to the ball for a long completion. On a second similar throw, Elmore smartly smacked the ball out on the way down instead of allowing the jump ball to be successful.
Williams and Araujo, plus sophomore Hunter Morris kept the midrange middle of the field on lockdown with Ed White mainly successful with out passes off the corner from slot positioned receivers. Morris showed off a good nose for chasing the ball as Ed White took the relatively simple out patterns that Orange Park gave away with Morris and Williams within arms reach of the play after the catch.
One other defensive back was Antwaun Cooper, who got some reps late in the session, who showed off some ball savvy. As with Elmore, Cooper is measured under six foot tall.
