ORLANDO – Middleburg High’s girls basketball team finished fifth with two wins and a tournament opening loss to a Brooklyn squad in the KSA Events Holiday Tournament on Dec. 28-30 at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Arena in one of the biggest holiday gatherings on the East Coast.

In the opener, against Fontbonne Hall Academy (NY), the Lady Broncos lost 50-47 with Fontbonne eventually finishing as bracket runnerup and Hardin Valley (TN) the bracket champion.

Middleburg, now 10-3 overall) would answer back with a Friday 56-34 win over Sunlake (FL), and a 62-42 win over Garfield (CA) for their fifth place finish.

The Broncos’ bracket featured teams from Huntsville (AL), Fountainbleu (LA).

Against Fontbonne, (6-1, a NY 2A school), Middleburg opened fast to a 14-9 first quarter lead, but stalled to a 17-7 fourth quarter effort for the 50-47 loss. Mallory Roney led all scorers with 19 points with Britany Range adding 11. Roney hit just two three pointers.

Against 7A-Sunlake (7-4), a 56-34 win, Range got the hot hand with 23 points with Roney adding another 17 and guard Jamyah Harkins putting up 10 points. Roney again had two three pointers.

In the final game, for fifth place, a 62-42 win over Garfield High of Los Angeles(2-9, a California Division III school), Range and Roney both got above 20 points with Range knocking down 29 and Roney hitting for 20. Range had three three pointers as the Lady Broncos rifled to a 29-11 first quarter lead. Garfield was 24-9 last year and lost in the first round of the California state playoffs.

In the yellow bracket, 7A-Nease (12-2), the top seed in Middleburg’s District 3-7A, won that group with a 59-45 win over West Torrance (CA) while 8A-Bartram Trail, in battle with Fleming Island in the District 4-8A standings, finished fifth with a win over Homestead (FL). Bartram Trail lost their opener to Tampa Catholic. Nease won games over Homestead (45-32) and Rockledge (63-40).

In the red bracket, 6A-Ponte Vedra (9-3), a key opponent to Clay in District 5-6A, had a first round bye, but lost 48-27 to Governor Mifflin (PA). Ponte Vedra lost 80-22 to Harrison (GA) to finish fourth.
