ORANGE PARK – The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reports that a Mother’s Day weekend domestic disturbance ended as a suicide incident and is now a death investigation.
On May 7, officers responded to 3441 Red Oak Circle E. near Moody Avenue where Sigman Lawrence, 57, was in a dispute with his wife.
Mary Justino, CCSO public information officer, said as Sigman’s wife and daughter retreated from the home, deputies arrived and heard a single gunshot.
Gertrude Sigman, 93, Lawrence Sigman’s elderly mother, was still inside with no contact able to be made with her in the residence, Justino said. A perimeter was set and as SWAT and negotiations were responding, officers found Lawrence Sigman in the back yard with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Meanwhile, deputies entered the home to check on and locate Gertrude Sigman. She was found deceased in bed in her room from undetermined causes.
Justino said an autopsy is in process with the Jacksonville Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death for Gertrude Sigman. Police want to know if her death was due to natural causes, she said.
Lawrence Sigman later died from his injuries at Orange Park Medical Center. CCSO Robbery-Homicide members responded to the home and took over the investigation.
