Blue Devils get second shot at Panthers

ORANGE PARK – Clay High, with two regular season wins over district rival Ridgeview that turned backwards with a stunning 6-0 loss in the district 4-6A final last week, will get their rematch of sorts with both teams winning their region playoff openers on Wed., May 2 as Clay beat Paxon 4-1 and Ridgeview trounced Ed White 15-0 in four innings to advance.

Ridgeview toyed with the White lineup with the Panthers getting 14 hits with 12 runs batted in off the White defense. Panther pitcher Brittany Michael had five strikeouts in the shortened game with just one hit.

Five Ridgeview batters hit for two runs; Raven Little, Ashlyn Halford, Brittany Michael, Cheyenne Vincent and Milani Sablan.

Ridgeview (15-6) will host Clay (15-11) in the region 1-6A semifinal on Tues., May 8 at 5 p.m. In the opposite region semifinal, Gulf Breeze (16-11)( will host West Florida (17-10).

Against Paxon, Clay broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth with two runs in the fifth and a final run in the seventh in the tight contest. Morgan Crutcher struck out seven batters for Clay with runs batted in from Sydney Lewis, Kylee Stacy and Hailey Stone.

Singles to Kaitlyn Kumpf and Marianne McDonald put Clay up 1-0 with Paxon scoring two innings later off two singles and an error.

In the fifth, Clay grabbed the 3-1 lead behind a single to McDonald that pushed Kumpf to third and set up a sacrifice bunt from Stone that scored Kumpf. Kumpf reached base after being hit by a pitch. A Lewis sacrifice bunt scored McDonald to put Clay up 3-1.

Doubles from Delaney Anfinson and Stacy put the final run on the scoreboard for Clay.
