GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Clay High’s boys soccer coach Joshua Bookstore got a double-helping of close games with an 11 second winning shot against Bishop Snyder last week and a 3:43 to go losing shot Monday against 3A-power Matanzas at Clay High School.
“Little by little we are getting there,” said Bookstore while on the sideline coaching his Blue Devils to a 0-0 standoff with region semifinalist Matanzas High on Monday before the Pirates whistled a shot past Clay goalie Jack Schoen to salvage a 1-0 win. “Last time, we played they were up 5-0 before the half.”
With acrobatic sideline play from freshman Samaree Lewis and tough defense from Riley Bookstore in front of Schoen, the Blue Devils were able to stave off the fast-moving Matanzas attack. Schoen came up with a half dozen quality saves with the Pirates getting a handful of corner kicks in the second half.
Bookstore, on Friday, got a 0-0 score until the 11 seconds to go mark against Bishop Snyder before the Blue Devils pushed in a rebound with eight seconds to go to get their won/lost record to 4-0-1 with impressive wins of 6-0 over Duval Charter and 8-1 over University Christian earlier in the season.
