Miller, a 12th place state meet finisher in 16:23.29 last year with senior teammate Evan Fuller, teamed up again with his fast friend who finished eighth in 16:25.2 to give the Golden Eagles boys teams a fourth place finish behind champion Bolles, Ocala Vanguard and Parkview high schools. Vanguard senior Joey Fitzpatrick was the overall winner at 15:31.7 with Bolles, Class 2A runnerups last year, placing second and third with juniors Charles Hicks, 15:36.2, and Chase Rivera, 15:47.3.
Hicks was the Class 2A runnerup last year with a 15:09.13 split while Rivera finished ninth in 15:54.74.
Fleming Island finished ahead of state powers 3A defending champion Creekside, Lake Mary and Bartram Trail, sixth in 3A last year, for the boys race with Ponte Vedra eighth.
Fleming Island’s next four finishers were junior Gage West, 40th in 17:31; freshman Jayden Scherer, 60th in 18:05; junior Nick Hoelscher, 76th in 18:24 and freshman Kameron Wallizada, 78th in 18:28.
Fleming Island’s girls finished 11th of 23 teams led by sophomore Madelyn Stevenson at 44th in 21:49.7 and freshman Emma Millson at 45th in 21:49.8.
