MENENDEZ – Fleming Island High football may have answered some questions about offense in Thursday’s 14-14 spring game halftime score with Pedro Menendez High School as sophomore quarterback Dean Hyams and senior wingback Jackson Bull combined for two long touchdowns through the air to highlight the contest. With second stringers and junior varsity playing the second half, Menendez flew to a 45-14 score with Fleming Island showing some depth questions for coach Damenyum Springs.

In the Fleming Island first offensive series, Hyams, showing some athletic ability with rollout passes being effective against the Menendez’ defense, the first major “near” blow was a floated pass over the top intended for 6-foot-4 tight end Nick Ferendo that Menendez got a late swipe at as Ferendo stretched for the lobbed pass.

With little hesitation on the next down, a fourth down and 12 from 28 yards out, Hyams found Bull on a skinny post from right to left against the Menendez defense and dropped the scoring ball right in front of him in full stride. Kicker Zack Fletcher hit the PAT kick to Fleming Island up 7-0. Hyams caught a 13 yarder prior to the score with tailback Max Micheals keeping the ball moving forward with strong runs off tackle including a fourth and one plunge that kept the drive alive.

Menendez answered just as fast with quick passes penetrating the Golden Eagle secondary missed two tackles on an out pass that went 66 yards to paydirt to tie the score 7-7.

Springs continued to try and pound the ball between the tackles with Anfernee McCaskill and Nijah Northrup, but neither ballcarrier could break much past the line of scrimmage.

Again, it was Hyams, Bull and Ferendo on the Golden Eagles second strike, a swing pass to Bull that followed a downfield block from Ferendo. Ferendo’s block gave Bull the corner of the Menendez defense and sent the “Action” Jackson to paydirt from 55 yards out for a 14-7 lead. Fletcher kicked his second PAT.

Menendez would get a deflected slant pass that linebacker Jack “Surgeon” Surgeoner got a hand on that landed in stride to a Menendez wideout just a step ahead of defensive back Isaiah Walker for a Menendez score.

Bull had a shot for a third score late in the second quarter but missed a pass over the Menendez safety.

On defense, Surgeoner and Ryan Smenda combined with Jayln Robinson with good results on pass rushes while noseguard Darius Gooden registered four sacks with solid attacks from the center of the defense. Lengthy defensive end Sam Snyder showed some prowess on the corner for Fleming Island.
