ORANGE PARK - St. Johns Country Day School girls softball opened with two high-scoring wins; a 12-0 score over Christ's Church Academy on February 14 and a 14-5 win over Providence on February 16, but it took an in-the-park homer from Maddie Wilkes to thwart Fernandina Beach 2-1 on Fri., Feb. 17.
With Brianna Enter stroking for 12 strikeouts to squelch Fernandina Beach's batting lineup, both teams found the base paths empty for the first five innings before Wilkes hit her long ball deep to right field then outran the return throw to home plate. Samantha Unger opened the inning with a double for the 2-0 score.
St. Johns (3-0) has home games against St. Joseph Academy on Wed., Feb. 22 and St. Francis Catholic on Fri., Feb. 24.
