On Feb. 20, Clay County Sheriff’s deputy detective David White was buried, just four days after the 35-year-old was shot and killed while investigating a suspected meth lab at a foreclosed home on Alligator Boulevard in Middleburg.

Owners of two Wells Road night clubs affected by two new county alcohol ordinances said they will appeal a federal judge’s ruling that upheld the ordinance restricting alcohol sales.

Orange Park Town Council voted to place eight charter amendments on its March 11 ballot they said will help the town conduct business more efficiently and make outdated policies, procedures and protocols comply with Florida statutes.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office charged Michael Renard Jackson of Orange Park with the pre-dawn murder and rape of Andrea Boyer, a veterinary technician at Wells Road Veterinary Medical Center.

Green Cove Springs City Council hired former state senator and former Florida Education Commissioner Jim Horne to serve as its lobbyist for $20,000 for the term of the legislative session and up to $36,000 for a full year of service.

The Clay County School Board deleted a proposed Fleming Island junior high school from its five-year plan citing how the school would leave just 300 students attending Green Cove Springs Junior High where a portion of Fleming Island students currently attend.

Green Cove Springs City Council met in a special session to determine what they could do after learning former City Manager William Emmerich was receiving unemployment compensation.

Meanwhile, Green Cove Springs City Council narrowed a list of 40 city manager applicants from 40 to 1. The top applicant was Eric Meserve, city manager of Indian Rocks Beach in Pinellas County.

Concerns over chopped down palm trees on Walnut Street in Green Cove Springs during the making of an HBO film put contract Clay County Film Commissioner Carl Post into hot water with the Tourist Development Council.

30 years ago, 1987
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrested Richard Marc Evonitz, a sailor base at Mayport, for allegedly exposing himself to a 13-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl while in his vehicle on Bellair Boulevard.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife agent Robert Prather said an investigation into the destruction of a bald eagle’s nest on Fleming Island was almost complete, saying he had some suspects in identified. The nest was cut down during construction of the Doctors Landing subdivision.

40 years ago, 1977
Florida Transportation Secretary Thomas Webb toured Clay County by helicopter during rush hour to get a firsthand look at the county’s traffic problems, while county commissioners pushed for a secondary north-south corridor such as Branan Field Road.

The Clay County School Board passed a new contract for teachers that gave them a 3.9 percent pay hike, not the 6.5 percent raise they’d negotiated for.

Orange Park Town Council awarded a $4,990 contract to Skaggs and Willis Landscaping Inc. of Jacksonville to beautify three medians on U.S. Highway 17/Park Avenue.
