ORANGE PARK – Oakleaf High senior defensive back Nick Roberts and Clay High senior offensive lineman Jarrod Leeds earned All-State first team honors; Roberts in Class 7A defense and Leeds in Class 5A offense, as statewide sports reporters and editors voted for the best players in Florida for 2016.

Roberts, with six interceptions; four with touchdown returns, was a dangerously fast outside cover man for coach Steve Reynolds that also added his prowess to the Knights’ offense as a slot receiver. Roberts is slated to attend University of South Florida next fall.

Leeds, a gigantic, agile lineman for coach Joshua Hoekstra and the Blue Devils, was instrumental in the steady ground game for Clay High that propelled them to a state semifinal berth against eventual state runnerup Ponte Vedra High School. Leeds is heading to Georgia Southern University.

Other area players chosen were, on second team offense Class 7A, Oakleaf High sophomore running back Keshawn King, who exploded on the scene for the Knights with exciting breakaways runs and, in Class 5A second team offense, Clay High senior running back Colin Wilson, who overcame a sophomore injury to return to the Blue Devil backfield and be part of the punishing run game for Hoekstra.

Fleming Island High junior linebacker Ryan Smenda was chosen to the Class 7A third team defense while Clay High senior middle linebacker Rico Schnitzler was given an honorable mention nod in Class 5A defense.
