COLUMBIA, SC – Ridgeview High graduate Jaylin Gilbert is second on the Benedict College mens basketball team with his three point shooting prowess, according to Benedict College sports information.

Gilbert, who transferred to Benedict after a stint at Miami Dade Junior College, has hit 24 of 63 three point attempts to earn second on the team to teammate Quayshun Hawkins who has 26 of 64 three pointers.

Gilbert has been in 12 games with three starts and is averaging 8.2 points per game. He has five assists and 18 rebounds for the Tigers who are now 7-6 overall, 4-1 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Tigers sit in second place behind Claflin College at 9-4,, also 4-1, with Fort Valley State at 6-7, 4-1.

Gilbert has game scoring totals of 18 against Livingston and two games of 16 points apiece against Saint Leo and Shaw.

In an archived story of the Tigers 82-73 win over Livingston on December 29, Gilbert was mentioned as second in scoring to Hawkins’ 29 points with Benedict coming back from 16 points twice for the win.

At Miami Dade, Gilbert averaged near eight points per game with three rebounds in 28 games played.

In 2013, Gilbert was a silky-smooth long-range bomber for Ridgeview High coach Rob Feltner, now the Middleburg High School principal, that won a district 3-6A title, two region playoff games; over Columbia and Wolfson, before losing in the region final to eventual 6A runnerup Pensacola Pine Forest 65-63.
