FLEMING ISLAND - Fleming Island High lacrosse midfielder Gina Porazzo made it a Senior Night to remember, scoring six goals to lead Fleming Island to an easy 14-2 win over visiting Paxon Tuesday night.
Porazzo, a senior middie, found the net in a variety of ways. She attacked the crease with drives from the left wing and from behind the goal. On some occasions, she faked shots high and shot low, and on others, faked right and shot left. Cutting to the crease without the ball, she also scored on quick wrist flips off of feeds from Riley Proctor and Katie Nichols.
“She is one of our more accurate shooters,” said Golden Eagles coach Clint Lyons. “That is why she’s our leading scorer.”
Paxon goaltender Olivia Bartlett was stellar in the early going, and as a result the Eagles trailed only 3-1 half way through the first half despite having been outshot 11-1. But the Fleming Island attack was relentless, and eventually Bartlett wilted. The Golden Eagles went on a four-goal run capped by senior Riley Proctor’s high shot in heavy traffic to take a 7-1 lead at halftime. Proctor finished with a hat trick.
The Golden Eagles dominated possession time thanks to the intensity of junior middie Kierra Marquis, who won 10 of 15 faceoffs and gobbled up six ground balls.
“Faceoffs are huge,” said Lyons. “If you win them, you are going to have a good night. And Marquis is like the Energizer Bunny out there.”
Marquis either scooped the dropped balls forward where she could chase them down, or flipped them back to teammate Briana Sarmento, who led all players with seven ground balls.
Nichols, Marquis, Sarmento, Karina Ortiz and Lindsey Knight notched single goals for Fleming Island. The Golden Eagles, now 5-6, will attempt to even their record Wednesday with a game at Jacksonville Lee.
Bartlett finished with 14 saves for the Eagles, whose goals were scored by Natalie Jackson and Effie Collins. Jackson’s goal was the prettiest of the night, coming on a quick-stick putaway of a pass from attack Ariane Canlas. Paxon, now 2-7, must regroup in time for Thursday night’s home game against rival Stanton.
