KISSIMMEE - Four of the 11 wrestlers for Fleming Island High School that advanced to the Class 3A championships in Kissimmee on Friday's first day of competition will wake up Saturday morning with the opportunity for one match to get to the state championship match at 6:30 p.m.
Briar Jackson at 106, Paul Detwiler at 152, Jason Davis at 182 and Jose Concepcion at 285 all survived the Day One gauntlet of matches that determine the four athletes capable of winning a state title Saturday night.
Staying in the hunt for medals for placing in the top six are Ryan Smenda at 195, who was third at 182 in 2016 and lost to unbeaten Josiah Gittman of St. Thomas Aquinas; Brandyne Mackey at 220 who faced off against defending 195 champion Chei Hill of South Dade and lost a courageous 11-3 decision against the 56-0 behemoth from the defending champion South Dade team. Mackey rebounded with a pin of Jerry Adrien of Treasure Coast to stay alive.
Fleming Island lost five wrestlers to the Saturday action; Albie Snedaker at 113, Deandre Demus at 120, Jacob Sandoval at 126, Trace Insalaco and Ben Sann at 160 with all five losing two matches on Friday.
At 106, Jackson roared through to the semifinal with an 18-3 tech fall and a pin and will face South Dade's unbeaten freshman Bretli Reyna (56-0) who has beaten Jackson once this season.
At 152, Detwiler survived and executed critical overtime points to win 7-5 over last year's third place finisher at 138 to face off in his semifinal with Bryce Marcus of St. Thomas Aquinas (42-3). Still in the picture for Detwiler is South Dade nemesis Todd Perry in the other semifinal. Perry has beaten Detwiler twice.
At 182, Davis continue his demolition of the weight class as he surges to better his two third place state finishes. Davis' semifinal is against Hamid Salahutdin, a senior from Sickles High in Tampa (37-3).
At 285, Concepcion again took an overtime path to victory over Osceola rival Nicholas Parsons after a 3-3 stalemate. Concepcion faces defending 285 champion Kyron Taylor of South Dade (47-0) in his semifinal with twice state champion at 220 Dylan Meeks of Dr. Phillips a possible finals' foe.
Oakleaf High's lone wrestlers, Ryan Rosano at 113, lost his first two matches to end his state meet travels.
