KISSIMMEE - Five champions from regions put the Clay High Blue Devils wrestling squad in a precarious position compared to previous Class 1A championships runs as the depth of the Clay squad traveled to Kissimmee with less personnel.

Clay sits in third behind defending state champ Lake Highland Prep with 64.5 points just behind Cardinal Gibbons in second with 65.0 and Prep with 119. Somerset is in fourth with 51.0 points.

Region 1-1A champions Lou Gagliardo at 106, Chris Merring at 120, Peyton Hughes at 126, Keath Sawdo at 145 and Kurt Jackson at 220 maintained their top-seed position with berths in Saturday's semifinal rounds that offer a shot at a state title while Kaleb Collins, a third placer at 195 last year, will have to resume his battle for yet another third place possibility with a second round loss thwarting his shot at the coveted state title.

Also in Kissimmee, Dylan Fabiani at 132 and Cody Taylor at 138 both ended their venture with two Friday losses with Fabiani facing off against Joey Silva of Lake Highland Prep, a defending state champion.

Gagliardo won a very tough quarterfinal against Dylan Kohn of the Master's Academy, who is younger brother to state third placer at 120 last year Devin Kohn. Gagliardo has defending state champion Jake Wolhtmann of Lake Highland Prep as a probable finals' opponent with a semifinal victory.

Merring advanced off an injury default, Hughes pinned to advance with Sawdo winning a major decision to get to his semifinal. Hughes's faces third placer Devin Kohn of the Master's Academy in his semifinal with Lake Highland Prep's Noah Castillo, the defending champion at 113 over Merring, a probable finals opponent.

Jackson won an 11-3 decision over Judas McKenzie, a state qualifier last year.
